Week 4 Stereotypes
This week we talk about culture and stereotypes, stereotypes are a generalization (attitudes, values, ideas, etc) of a group of people, that can be good ore bad. A bad stereotype, will be the German stereotype: all German people are Nazi. This isn't true and because of a small group in second world war, people link this ideal to all German culture.
"Culture broadly defines a system of meaning for a group of people ant it includes language, laws, customs, myths, images..."(C.C page 37)
"Culture is ordinary: (...)Every human society has its own shape, its own meaning. Every human society expresses these, in institutions, and in the arts and learning..." (Raymond Williams)
Culture has many definitions, but the one I like the most is Raymond's theorie, he defines culture as common and characteristic of all human beings (every group has it one culture), differentiating from the concept of high culture, that is known as a social level, and related to manners and knowledge
